March 7, 2021

On Sunday, March 7 at 11 a.m.  we will discuss The Mountains Sing, a novel by Nguyễn Phan Quế Mai.

A luminous, complex family narrative that spans nearly a century of Vietnamese history, from the French colonial period through the communist Viet Minh's rise to power, the separation between North and South Vietnam, the Vietnam War, all the way to the present day. Told alternately by Diệu Lan, born in 1920, and her granddaughter Hương, born in 1960, the novel resembles a choral performance with multiple voices. ---NPR

Que Mai contains her saga with a poet’s discipline, crafting spare and unsparing sentences, and uplifts it with a poet’s antenna for beauty in the most desolate circumstances...Forgiveness and reconciliation — within families, among Vietnamese and with foreign enemies — are recurring themes. ---New York Times

We meet on the first Sunday of each month at 11 a.m.  New readers are always welcome - please feel free to drop in when you can.  Books are available through the New Lebanon Library or the library of your choice.
