Victoria Sweet is a physician who worked at Laguna Honda in San Francisco, then the only alms (free) hospital
in the United States. She became interested in the history of medicine; specifically the nun
Hildegard's practice of medieval medicine. Sweet takes time off to study Latin and Hildegard and to
eventually get her Ph.D. to better understand how premodern medicine evolved into what is practiced today.

Sweet comes to the conclusion that "slow medicine" combining some of Hildegard's technique
and some of modern medicine's technology is what would be the most humane, effective, and economical.
The book is well-written and this reader came away wishing all doctors would read God's Hotel.
